Balance bikes for toddlers and one-year olds

Age is a useful guide to kick things off when it comes to sizing, because balance bikes are broadly built for little ones who are tearing around from 18 months and up to around 4 years old. But if your baby is in the ballpark 8 to 15 months old, they’ll likely be crawling, learning to totter or just about finding their feet, and that’s where a Velio bike is an ideal introduction to balance-based riding. So, first decide whether they’re best popped in the saddle of a balance bike or kickstarted on Velio. If they’re primed to begin on a fully-fledged balance bike, here’s five simple steps to follow to guarantee the perfect fit.

If you’re still in the very early stages of making a decision, have a look at our full guide to choosing the best balance bike for your kid.

Step 1: Sizing starts with geometry

The size and shape of a bike frame, the riding position, handlebar height, wheel size and tire width all combine to determine how comfortable a balance bike is, how easy it is to control, and how well it does on different terrains.

At Early Rider we agonize over the tiniest details to refine the best kid-specific geometries to ensure your child gets the absolute most out of their balance bike. That’s why it’s so important to check that you’re buying a balance bike from a maker that prioritizes these design decisions. Find out more about our approach to crafting the ultimate balance bike.

Step 2: Measure their inseam

Getting a precise measurement is key when it comes to sizing. If you can have them stand up and pretend to be a statue you’ll likely get a more accurate measurement. Their inseam runs from the highest part of their inner thigh down to their ankle.

Step 3: Minimum seat height

When the seat height is at its lowest position it needs to be about an inch shorter than your child's inseam measurement. When they’re in the cockpit of their bike you want both their feet flat on the ground with a slight bend in their knees for comfort and better control. You’ll then be able to raise their seat height as they grow.

Step 4: Balance bike selection

Use our size chart to select a balance bike that perfectly fits their height and inseam measurement. The ‘minimum seat height’ column is the one to focus on. Remember, you’re looking for one that’s around an inch shorter than their inseam. Check out our ranges to find the best option for you.

Balance bikes for babies and toddlers - The Early Rider Super Velio and Bella Velio are the ideal option for getting babies and toddlers moving and make the perfect balance bikes for one year olds

Balance bikes for two year olds - we have a choice of wooden and aluminum balance bikes which suit children as young as 18 months and run right up to four year olds.

Step 5: Handlebar reach check

When their balance bike arrives, or if you're buying in-store from one of our dealers, be sure to check that your child can comfortably reach the handlebars. If you're starting them on the Bigfoot, they’ll also need to be able to easily reach the brake lever.
