Meet The Bonsai

The Bonsai combines the heirloom beauty of 100% grade A birch with the durability of precision aluminium. It’s strong, sustainable and best of all, insanely beautiful. Featuring Ritchey Logic-designed aluminium components, The Bonsai is built to perform and look good doing it. Lightweight aluminium rims, sealed cartridge bearings, and versatile 1.75”” tyres ensure smooth, stable rides on any terrain. With a focus on sustainability and durability, it’s built to inspire and endure for generations.

Closer look

The full story

No composite. No compromise

The Bonsai is built from 100% grade A Northern European birch. We don’t pad it out with filler and we don’t glue layers of wood shavings together to look like wood. We use real wood, sustainably sourced to last a lifetime.

Birch is a great material. It has a superior strength to weight ratio preventing little ones from toppling under the weight of their own bikes. It’s splinter resistant (of course) and features a pleasing knot free smooth grain.

Heirloom beauty of wood, precision and durability of aluminium

When a bike’s built to last a really long time, you better make sure it’s always nice to look at. The Bonsai is a beautiful combination of engineering acumen and design aesthetics. It’s a great bike, of course. But it’s also a really, really pretty bike.

Unlike The Lite and Classic, the other wooden bikes in the stable, the Bonsai features a precision aluminium finishing kit. We collaborated closely with Ritchey Logic to produce really a small and really good stem and handlebar combo.

Tom Ritchey, its indefatigable president and lead designer, is one of the pioneers credited with the invention of mountain biking, amongst other innovations. We have collaborated for over 10 years, producing the best kids specific components to elevate our bikes.

Roll model

The Bonsai specs market leading aluminium rims and hubs to save weight and high ABEC grade sealed cartridge bearings to minimise weight and rolling resistance.

By specifying such high grade wheel sets, we are able to justify investing weight in tyres that provide the safety and performance that make all the difference, without handing them a weight penalty.

Tread carefully

The Bonsai runs fast rolling 1.75” wide tyres to give 2-4 year olds the stability they need to learn, the air volume they need for comfort and the grip to tackle mixed terrain, confidently, even in the rain. Because there’s no such thing as the wrong weather. Only the wrong bike.

Sustain-Ability™

Cutting down trees to make bikes isn't sustainable. Kids bikes are the worst, often unable to last even one child. Early RIder's solution? Simple, a contrary design and manufacturing mandate: 'to sustain ability'.

To sustain the ability to inspire, child after child. To build bikes designed to last and to ensure children can reach the level of skill that makes sure they'll always ride. In other words taking an uncompromising focus on form, function and top quality parts built to last.

To sustain the ability of all those involved in the production of our bikes to live healthy, fulfilled lives. In other words creating safe work environments, promoting employee wellness, supporting communities and upholding human rights through the entire supply chain.

Perfect First Balance Bike – Stylish, Sturdy, and Confidence-Boosting

We are absolutely thrilled with this balance bike. The build quality is outstanding and feels very premium right from the start. What really stands out is the handlebar design, which is inspired by a mountain bike – it not only looks great but also provides excellent control.

The overall design is simply stunning and definitely an eye-catcher. But beyond the looks, it performs just as well: our 22-month-old son is already riding it very confidently, which really shows how well it supports early balance and coordination.

Highly recommended for anyone looking for a high-quality, stylish, and durable first bike for their child.

Gorgeous

Ordered for my 18m old but I think I also ordered it for myself. Maaaaan is this bike gorgeous. It screams quality and uniqueness. My boy is a tad short but I knew that when ordering. He'll be ready for it in the spring/summer and I'm sure he'll turn heads at our parks. After seeing the quality in this bike, I will seriously consider ER's bigger bikes for him as he grows. Very happy with this purchase and can't wait to see him shred.

A bit special

Lovely bike for the boy. Well made and gets lots of positive comments. Minor point is that the valve caps were missing. Also my two year old has unusually long legs, so this may not last him as long as I would like, but will be pleased that he has memories of this as his first ever bike.

Fabulous

Ordered for my Son's second birthday present. Delivered within a few days from ordering. Beautiful product, very well crafted and distinctive. It could be hung on the wall as a piece of art once he's grown out of it. Only thing I would say is that he's still a tiny bit small for the bike (and he's fairly typical height for a 2 year old and has an inside leg measurement equal to the minimum specified), however he still seems to get enjoyment from merely walking it around and will soon grow into it. Highly recommended, particularly if looking for something a bit more niche.

Looks great, but issues with the seatpost

Literally just took the bike out of it's packaging box and it looks amazing but, much like the review posted by Mike on Apr 06, 2016 the seat tube glue is either missing entirely or has not bonded with the metal seat tube, leaving it spinning inside and easily removal from the wood. Sadly I'll be sending it back as it really can't be used like this :(

Beautiful but issues

Absolutely beautiful design but it has too many issues.
Firstly, the seatstay is wide, so it's easily scratched when your child puts the bike down.
Secondly, I noticed the rear wheel being loose despite axle and all bolts being tight, and it appears bearings having no play; the design needs some redesigning similar to the "Lefty".
Lastly, seat tube glue totally delaminated from metal seat tube, leaving it spinning inside and easily removal from the wood.
I would say the bike had between 15-20 uses; I am extremely disappointed.

Stunning!

I bought the Bonsai for my friends son for Christmas. It looks great in the photo's but it's even better in reality. I was amazed by how beautiful it was. The detailing is outstanding and the wooden frame is something else. I even considered keeping it and putting it on display alongside my restored vintage motorcycles, I may yet do that, but it will mean another purchase as the wee man will be awfully upset if Santa doesn't deliver. Well done Easy Rider - you rightly deserve to feel proud of this fantastic and robust design.

Coolest balance bike ever

The Bonsai is a masterpiece of design! It looks really great and the swinging back arm makes it unique.
The seatpost can be adjusted stepless and the handlebar is comfortable and secure. The first test rides from my son were very promising and he opened his eyes wide and is overjoyed.
